When Is the Best Time to Visit Tanzania? A Month-by-Month Guide to Safari, Climbing and Beaches

Safari, Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar each have completely different sweet spots. Drawing on years of building trips on the ground, we break down the Great Migration, the river crossings, calving season, the climbing seasons and the beach dry seasons month by month.

"So when is the best time to go?" — it's the question we hear most. Tanzania is a year-round destination, but the best months for safari, Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar are quite different. Even within July, "the safari is perfect, but summit morning is well below freezing." Here we lay out what each month is really like, and when to go for each kind of trip.

Tanzania's climate in a nutshell

Tanzania sits just south of the equator, but huge differences in altitude mean the climate varies a lot from region to region. Through the year there are four broad seasons.

Long dry season (June–October): the best time for travel overall. Cool, low humidity and long runs of clear skies. Animals gather at water sources, making this peak safari season.

Short rains (mid-November–December): brief afternoon showers, but fewer visitors — a good-value window. The landscape turns green and wildebeest herds heading for calving begin to gather in the southern Serengeti.

Short dry season (January–February): dry again. Mass calving takes place in the southern Serengeti and predators are very active. A good time to climb Kilimanjaro.

Long rains (late March–May): heavy rain, and some lodges close. Prices drop, but road conditions need care.

The best time for safari

For safari, June to October is the standout period, for three reasons.

  • Short grass makes animals easy to see — vegetation dies back and animals stand out clearly
  • Wildlife concentrates around water — animals gather at rivers and waterholes, so patience is rewarded with Big Five sightings
  • Mara River crossings (July–September) — around 1.5 million wildebeest risk everything to cross the Mara River

January–February, meanwhile, is calving season in the southern Serengeti. Calves are born one after another and predators hunt — a dramatic time with fewer visitors.

The best time to climb Kilimanjaro

Climbing is concentrated in the dry months of January–March and June–October.

  • January–March: high chance of clear skies; cold, but superb views. Summit temperatures can reach −15°C
  • June–October: the most stable season, slightly milder nights, and the most popular
  • April–May, November: rainy seasons best avoided. Trails get muddy and summit success drops sharply

Timing your summit night with the full moon is popular, as moonlight lights up the landscape.

The best time for Zanzibar

Zanzibar is best in its two dry seasons, June–October and December–February.

  • June–October: low humidity and comfortable. Strong winds make it popular with kitesurfers
  • December–February: a little hotter (28–32°C), but sea clarity is at its best — ideal for snorkelling and diving
  • March–May: the long rains. Some resorts close, so check in advance

Summary

  • Best all-round → July, August, September
  • Best value → November and March (the edges of the rainy seasons)
  • For the Mara River crossings → July–September
  • For calving season → January–February
  • To combine with a climb → January–February or July–October

Shifting your dates by just one or two weeks can change what you see dramatically. Working backwards from "I want to see this animal" or "these are the only weeks I can travel" is what we do best, so feel free to ask even before your dates are fixed.

Frequently asked questions

Q.When is the best time to visit Tanzania?

July to September, in the dry season, is the best all-round choice. The grass is short so animals are easy to see on safari, and the wildebeest cross the Mara River in the northern Serengeti. It is also a good time for Kilimanjaro and Zanzibar's beaches.

Q.When can I see the Great Migration on safari?

The Mara River crossings take place in the northern Serengeti from July to September. In January–February, calving season in the southern Serengeti brings newborn calves and predator hunts. Which you want to see decides when you should go.

Q.Should I avoid the rainy season (April–May)?

During the long rains some lodges close and roads get muddy, and it is a poor time to climb Kilimanjaro. But prices fall and there are fewer visitors, so the edges of the rainy seasons (March and November) can suit safari-focused travellers on a budget.
