— FAQ
Frequently asked
questions
Q.Can I climb without mountaineering experience?
No technical skills are needed, but you do need the stamina to walk for long days (five to nine days in total). Experience of a few full-day hikes is enough. Before you go, we recommend building fitness with walks or easy hikes of about an hour, three times a week.
Q.When is the best season?
The dry months of January–March and June–October are the main climbing seasons. January–March is cold but has the clearest skies, while June–October is cool and stable. In the long rains (April–May) and short rains (November) the trails get muddy and harder.
Q.Which route should I choose?
Machame (7 days) is the most popular for its balance of summit success and scenery. Lemosho (8 days) acclimatises slowly and has the highest success rate, which suits first-timers too. Marangu (6 days) is comfortable with hut accommodation but shorter, so success rates are lower. For scenery, the Northern Circuit (9 days) is quiet and superb.
Q.How can I prevent altitude sickness?
The basics are an itinerary designed for acclimatisation (more days), plenty of water (3–4 litres a day), walking slowly — 'pole pole' — and, after talking to your doctor, preventive medication such as Diamox. Our guides measure your oxygen saturation every day and take safety seriously.
Q.Can I rent equipment?
Yes — sleeping bags, down jackets, hard shells, boots, headlamps and poles can all be rented locally ($20–$50 per item). For hygiene, we recommend bringing your own base layers, hiking shirts and socks.
Q.What happens if I can't reach the summit?
For safety, you may need to turn back on the way up, and the guide's decision is final. There are no refunds, but we can offer a discounted second attempt on another route. A medical check and good fitness preparation beforehand are the most important things.
